about

After 30 years, a new album, a new name. A Thousand Plateaus emerges as a later stage iteration of their mid-80s cold wave outfit, About the Poets. Still reveling in its post-punk and indie spirit, the band presents an ambitious and bold comeback album.

Over eight tracks, A Thousand Plateaus is intended to be big, unafraid, and urgent, as we hope the opening track, “Even the Sun has a Dial” makes clear with its strong drive, stressed guitars, assertive vocals, and summoning drums. In the second track, “Sabellian,” the vocals rest into a more lyrical pace; however, by the chorus the song moves to making an equally assertive statement. Like “Sun Dial,” “Sabellian” is played forward and with resolve. So too is “My Purchase,” the album’s forth track, which relentlessly pushes through its changes in a style congruent with such 80s punk giants as Misfits. Contrastingly, “The Night will Open” strives for a depth of sound that might harken back to the 4AD catalogue of the mid-80’s. Certainly the more tender of our influences may also be detected in “I Have You.” The album’s sixth song, “Avivit,” calmly unfolds as if it were a story being told at the end of a bar, and hits in the middle like a shot of Spirytus, inserting a re-connection with the bigness of the album sound. The final song on the vinyl release, “November Snow,” is similar to the album’s opening number, but moves more evenly and methodically to its dark climax. “The Natural Lawbreakers” is made available to purchasers of the lp as a high resolution download. We believe the song provides a fitting cap to the collection, and feels perhaps like a walk through tall rolling grasses at early dusk.
